New Report | CCS in Europe – Regional overview

With 119 commercial-scale facilities in various stages of development, momentum for CCS in Europe is building and the importance of this technology in mitigating climate change is gaining ground. Our new thought leadership report maps out the latest policy and regulatory frameworks developed and tested in Europe, highlighting the main funding mechanisms available for CCS developers at the EU and national level, and providing an overview of CCS success stories.

The Global CCS Institute at COP 28

As an official observer of the UNFCCC, the Institute will be on the ground in Dubai, UAE to attend COP 28. During the Conference, we will follow climate negotiations and discussions relevant to carbon capture and storage technology, and host and participate in several events related to CCS and carbon management. A list of Institute-led events, along with our external speaking engagements at COP, can be found on our website.

Institute Hosts Multi-Government CCS Working Group in Europe

Established in November 2022, our European Multi-Government CCS Working Group convenes regular meetings to assist government stakeholders in shaping CCS regulations. A recent well-attended online meeting on the 15th of November saw active participation from government representatives, marking a step forward in addressing crucial issues. Western Australian CCUS Hubs Study: Key findings

The Institute Attends MENA Climate Week 2023, Highlights Value of CCS in the Region

In October, the Institute was on the ground in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with other climate stakeholders to attend the UNFCCC’s MENA Climate Week (MENACW) 2023. During the event, we followed CCS relevant discussions and organised three side events in partnership with KAPSARC, CEM CCUS, CATF, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy to unpack CCS progress in the region. In this recap, we highlight our main CCS takeaways that emerged from MENA Climate Week 2023.

The Institute at the European Commission's CCUS Forum

The Institute is thrilled to have attended the third edition of the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Forum organised by the European Commission and hosted by the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities on 27-28 November 2023 in Aalborg, Denmark. Held every year, the event brings together representatives from EU institutions, EU and third countries, NGOs, business leaders and academia to facilitate the deployment of CCUS technologies. During Day 2, the Institute's General Manager of Advocacy and Communications, Guloren Turan, hosted a fire-side chat with Brad Crabtree, Assistant Secretary with US Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy, where they discussed international investment in carbon management.

The Institute Holds Second SEACA Workshop in Indonesia | |
The Institute successfully hosted the second South East Asia CCS Accelerator (SEACA) Workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop, which aims to accelerate CCS deployment in the region, saw over 100 delegates attend, including ASEAN government members and the World Bank, who highlighted their perspectives on CCS and noted the importance of collaboration. The Institute looks forward to organising the following SEACA workshop by mid-next year.
Following the SEACA workshop, the Institute was also present at the inaugural Malaysia CCUS Conference, where Alex Zapantis, the Institute's General Manager of External Affairs, provided an overview of the status of CCS and CCS opportunities in the region. | | | |

The Institute Organised a Europe Members Meeting in Italy
| |
On 22 November, the Institute organised a Members Meeting in Florence, Italy geared towards members based in Europe. The event provided an overview of the status of CCS globally and across the region. Together with experts in the field, we also explored opportunities and challenges impacting the deployment of CCS in Italy. More information about the next Europe Members Meeting to be held in 2024 will be made available soon on the Institute's Members Portal.
